The accident took place on U.S. Highway 67 about 6 miles north of Poplar Bluff while Darrell and his 3 friends were returning from a Van Halen concert at The Arena in St. Louis, MO in a 1981 Chevrolet Camaro. The other 3 occupants were the driver, Charles "Chuck" E. Miller, 17; Gina Marie Whitmer, 21; and Jackie M. Watson, 21, all of Poplar Bluff. The four friends were pronounced dead at the scene at 2:25 a.m. according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The MSHP speculates that Miller was driving the vehicle and that all four apparently fell asleep. The car failed to make a curve and ran off the road, slamming head-on into a tree. None of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
Darrell was born May 7, 1967 in Poplar Bluff, the son of Rayburn and Ernestine Morrison Pennington.
He was a graduate of Poplar Bluff High School in the class of 1985.
Darrell was survived by his parents.
He is buried at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
