Gerald entered the US Army in 1961. Staff Sergeant Hill began his Vietnam tour on July 1, 1968, as a tank commander with the 11th Armored Cavalry, 2nd Squadron, E Troop. He was mortally wounded in action on April 15, 1969, while serving in provence 22, South Vietnam. He died from multiple fragmentation wounds in Madigan Hospital, Tacoma, Washington, June 4, 1969.
