Born March 6, 1950, he was the son of John and Virginia (Ard) Daugherty. He married Sandra Adams on Dec. 20, 1980, in Bedford, and she survives.
He was owner of Superior Kiln and Mill Service, Bedford for 30 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman’s Club and the American Legion, Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford.
Dan loved old cars. He designed and built a Cadillac engine and it was on his bucket list to set a land speed record with it at Bonneville Salt Flats. After getting ill, he changed his bucket list and wanted his legacy to reflect the care and concern for young people who participated with the Limestone Robotics program and Lawrence Co. STEAM. He restored a building for this activity and knew after meeting the kids and the mentors of this robotics team, that helping them was the legacy he wanted to leave. The building supports ten teams and 130 kids, at this time, and is still growing.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra of Bedford; four daughters, Elizabeth (Scott) Gaither of Bedford, Leah (Phil) Hillenburg of Norman, Teri (Derrick) Fields of Bedford and Maggie Taylor of Oolitic; nine grandchildren, Wilson, Sarah, and Thomas Gaither, Philip and Heather Hillenburg, Taylor (William) Woods, Emily Telez, and Ben and Garrett Taylor; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert (Joy) Daugherty, Mike (Sheila) Daugherty and Leonard ( Joy) Daugherty; and one sister, Connie (Mike) Kendall.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, De. 28, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, with Wayne Gaither officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be considered to Lawrence County STEAM or to Blessings in a Backpack.
