Maria Lourdes Velez, 86, of San Angelo, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 1, 2016 in San Angelo surrounded by her loving family.

Maria, known as Lula to her family and friends, was born September 16, 1930 in Hualahuises, Mexico to Manuel and Josefa Valdez Pequeno. She was the second youngest of 12 Children.

She married her soulmate Alfredo Velez, Jr. on May 1, 1955 in Reynosa Mexico, and together they shared 61 beautiful years of marriage.

Lula's priority in life was being a wonderful homemaker, but she also worked at Levi Straus for a few years before working at Ethicon, where she retired in 1993. Above all, Lula was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was always laughing and saying humorous things to everyone and always had something positive to say about everyone. She enjoyed cooking and always offered to cook a meal to anyone who came to visit with great pleasure no matter what time of the day. She loved people and it showed in the way she endeared herself to everyone she knew.

In her spare time, she had many passions. She loved being outdoors and had a green thumb for gardening: growing many plants, fruits and vegetables. She had a love for birds. Through the years, she nursed many stray birds she found in her yard back to health. She also loved embroidering, canning, and crocheting and made numerous table cloths, bed spreads, and doylies for her family and friends. Her zest for life and her incredible love and passion for her family and friends will live on in our hearts forever!

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Lula was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Jose Cruz Pequeno, Vicente Pequeno, and German Pequeno, and 1 sister, Maria Teresa Pequeno.

She is survived by her husband Alfredo Velez, Jr., of San Angelo; her sons, Alfredo Velez, III and his wife Heidi, of The Woodlands, TX., Manuel Velez and his wife, Gina, of Coppell, TX., and Arturo Velez, of San Angelo; her Daughters, Elizabeth Hernandez, of San Angelo and Ruth Hunt and her husband Dean, of San Angelo; her Grandchildren, James Hernandez, Nicholas Velez, Tailor Hunt, Cameron Hunt, Rachael Velez, Alexandra Velez and Andrea Velez; her Great Grandchildren, Jayden Hernandez, Julien Hernandez, and Jorden Hernandez; her sister, Maria Isabel Cantu, of Mission, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rosary will be 6:00 P.M., Friday, October 7, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home Chapel. The burial will be private.

Pallbearers for the service will be her grandsons.

Donations can be made to Hospice of San Angelo.
