Since birth, Mike surprised his doctors and family with his tenacity and resilience in the face of several lifelong, daunting medical challenges. Those qualities were an endearing source of inspiration to Mike's family and friends.
Despite his medical issues, Mike was always an adventurous, athletic and curious person. Always interested in medicine and technology, Mike pursued nursing and, after his second of several bouts with cancer, obtained a degree in medical equipment technology.
At 7 years of age, Mike was diagnosed with juvenile macular degeneration. At age 8, and after numerous treatments proved unsuccessful, the condition suddenly disappeared with no plausible medical explanation. Mike's grade school teachers, the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, N.J., had prayed on his behalf to Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, a renowned member of their order who died in 1927 and whose cause for sainthood they had pursued since 1945.
Mike's case was subsequently submitted to the Vatican for consideration and after 16 years of exhaustive investigation, Pope Benedict XVI pronounced the restoration of Mike's eyesight a miracle. As a result, Sr. Miriam was beatified in October 2014 in Newark, N.J., the first such ceremony ever held on U.S. soil. Mike was honored to play a significant role in the beatification and a continuing role in the cause of sainthood for Blessed Miriam Teresa, as she is now known.
