Velma lived to 102 years of age, she was born in Pitt County, moved to Vanceboro in 1969 and to Greenville in 1976. She was married to Asa E. Smith who preceded her in death. Asa and Velma married on 23 Nov 1929. They were parents of four children, daughters, Vida and Barabra; sons, Morris Earl Smith and Robert Ray Smith, all who survive her. She also was survived by seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren Velma was a homemaker and for many years, she and her husband were farmers.
