A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. for Dr. Millard C. Edds, who practiced medicine for more than 50 years and was well known for his dedication to his church.
Dr. Edds, 77, of Van Buren, Arkansas died Wednesday at his home.

The memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church in Van Buren. A private burial followed at Gracelawn Cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.

"His love and dedication to his family, church and business was foremost," said longtime friend Earl Robinson. "He also was one of the most positive individuals I have ever known."

Earl Robinson said Edds always had a smile on his face, no matter what. " I can remember when he was the only admitting doctor at Crawford Memorial Hospital. Robinson said. "He spent many a night there, delivering babies and treating patients.

Dr. Edds was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Van Buren First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and past chairman of the Deacons. He was a native of Glenwood, Arkansas and a graduate of the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1950.

He practiced in Mulberry from 1952 to 1957 before moving to Van Buren where he practiced until he retired in 1993. He was a member of the Crawford County and the Arkansas Medical Societies and American Academy of Family Physicians. He recently was honored by the University of Arkansas Medical Science for his 50 years of service to medical practice.

Dr. Edds supported his church and he did that very consciously by serving on the Board of Deacons, said Paul Hurst, another longtime friend. Former Van Buren Mayor Allen Ray Toothaker said Dr. Edds was a great asset to the community. He meant so much to so many people. He was a very dedicated servant who really cared about his church, family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Billie; one daughter, Laura; three sons; one sister, Evelyn; one brother; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fist Baptist Church building fund, 1121 Main Street, Van Buren, AR 72956.
