Daughter of George Washington Toten and Sarah Isabelle Benson
-------------------------
Julia Bell Toten was born on November 4, 1883, in Alabama, when her father, George Washington Toten, was 43 and her mother, Sarah Isabelle (Benson) Toten, was 28.

She married Joseph Claude Davis on June 8, 1903, in Navarro, Texas fairly soon after they met. Joseph began working for his uncle in Navarro County shortly after his mother and step father James Frank Talley relocated the Davis family to the adjacent Falls County.

The couple then moved to Hardeman County, Texas in 1904 then to Garvin County Oklahoma a few years later, by 1910 where their son George Caswell (Shorty) was born. Their daughter Tressa was born in 1913 also in Garvin County Oklahoma. They had purchased farmland in Hardeman County, Texas by working farms in Oklahoma.

In 1910 census taken May 20, 1910, Julia Davis was 25 years old and lived in Turnbull, Oklahoma with her husband, Joseph Claude, and 4 sons, Walter 5, Edmond 4, Doyal 3 , Caswell 3/12.

In 1920 census taken January 24, 1920, Julia B. Davis was 35 years old and lived in Hardeman County, Texas with her husband, Joseph Claude, 5 sons Walter 15, Edmond 14, Doyal 12 , Caswell 10, Robert Carl (listed then as boy 5/12) and 2 daughters Tressa 6 and Mercedese 3½.

In 1930 census, taken April 16, 1930, Julia B. Davis was 46 years old and lived in Hardeman County, Texas with her husband, Joseph, 2 daughters Tressa 16 and Mercedese 13 and 2 sons Robert Carl (Bud) 10, and Everette Arthur 3.

During the depression, food and goods produced by the Davis family was generously provided to the needy families in the surrounding area and was coordinated by Julia, and delivered by Joseph and the boys. They were greatly respected for their benevolence and kindness during some very tough times.

In December 1932 their youngest daughter Mercedese 16 will marry Alvin Nathan 'Alvie' Duncan.

Over the years, Julia and Joseph had invested in land and were quite successful farmers and ranchers.

Tragically in 1934 almost the entire family will be injured in an accident. Mercedes Davis Duncan at 18 was severely injured in a truck accident in 1934 in Clovis, New Mexico when the truck with almost the entire family in it, blew a front tire and went off a bridge, severely injuring most members of the family.

In the accident Mercedes received multiple skull fractures and had brain injuries that plagued her until her death in September 1938. Mercedes gave birth June 8, 1936 to her only child Sandra Mercedes Duncan.

Indeed this accident and related hospital bills cost the Davis family almost all of their holdings and Joseph went to work in the Acme Gypsum plant near Quanah and also worked as a master carpenter in the Quanah area.

In 1935 on Oct 23, their youngest daughter Tressa will marry Henry Bass in Quanah, Texas and buy the property next door to her parents, living there until the early 1950's when they relocate to Lubbock.

In 1940 census, taken April 1, 1940, Julia Davis was 55 years old and lived in Quanah, Texas with her husband, Joseph, and youngest son Arthur, now 13.

In the fall of 1956 Julia stands in the attached photograph with her husband Joseph Claude and grandson Everett who had lived with them from being a toddler. This photo was taken only a few days before Julia suffered a stroke and was paralyzed and unable to speak for the remainder of her life. Everett, living with his grandparents, was in first grade at Reagan Elementary in Quanah. Joseph cared for Julia and Everett through the remainder of first semester and Christmas 1956, when Joseph took Julia and Everett to live with his surviving daughter Tressa (Davis) Bass and husband Henry Bass now living in Lubbock, Texas.

In December 1959 while his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson had travelled back to Quanah to testify in a court case regarding an auto accident they were in, Joseph Claude passed away from a heart attack Dec. 8, 1959 while in Lubbock caring for Julia.

Though she could not speak, she knew his passing was occurring from evidence found in the home he left for her and things he had prepared for the family.

Julia would not recover from the grief of losing Joseph and slipped into health problems and passed away several weeks later on January 19, 1960 as the doctors said ‘she has no will to continue fighting now. She wants to be with him.’
