CHARLESTON, IL – Charles “Bud” Shafer, age 84 of Charleston, went to his Heavenly Home on Friday, December 23, 2016 while at Paris Healthcare Center in Paris, IL.

Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at noon on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with his grandson, Mr. Jon Shafer officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery in Charleston with Military Services to be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Bushton Christian Church or to the Seven Hickory-Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Charles Shafer was born May 13, 1932 in East St. Louis, Illinois, a son of the late Corlis and Lavona (Davis) Shafer. He married Lila Newby on October 18, 1952 in Corinth, Mississippi and they have celebrated 63 years of marriage.

In addition to his loving and devoted wife Lila, he is survived by two sons, Jeff Shafer of Alabama and Randy Shafer and wife Patty Higginbotham of Paris, IL; 3 grandchildren, Jon Shafer and wife Natalie, Mitch Shafer and fiancé Stephanie and Whitney Shafer and boyfriend Kyle Triestram; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and McKenzie; 4 step-grandchildren, Brittany Rhodes and husband Dusty, Jessica Adams and boyfriend Kody Key, Betsy Adams and fiance Adam Wochner and Cody Adams and wife Jessica; 8 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Shafer and Wanda Pierce and a sister-in-law, Ann Shafer, all of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by a son, Mike Shafer; two brothers, Larry Shafer and William Shafer; a brother-in-law, Bob Pierce; and a step-great-grandchild, Boe Adams.

Bud, as he was affectionately known, was a U.S. Army Veteran honorably serving during the Korean War. He was an avid bowler and was a member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). He was a life-long farmer in Seven Hickory Township and following his formal retirement from farming he worked part time in maintenance at Morton Park in Charleston.

Bud had been a member of the Bushton Christian Church for more than 40 years. He was a man of faith who was devoted to his church family, serving as an elder and with Lila has worked at maintaining their small rural church. He was devoted to his fellow neighbors and served as a volunteer with the Seven Hickory-Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years and as Fire Chief for several of those years. He was devoted to the farming community as a member of the Coles County Farm Bureau and as a member and past president of the Farmers Grain of Dorans. It was Bud’s devotion to his family which was paramount. He was intent on being a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and knew the value of spending quality time with those he loved.

Bud’s friendship was valued by many and he would come to the aid of anyone in need. His admirable qualities along with his infectious smile and light-hearted approach to life made it easy and enjoyable to spend time in his presence. He was a man who was well respected and will be greatly missed.
