John lost three sons,Sanders Simon and Isaac were all killed in the Confederate Army Civil War conflect. Only
son Benjamine who had moved to Colorado prior to 1863 and two daughters, Nancy (Kirby) and Polly (Cantrell) were alive at his death.

In 1870 census he was 78 yrs old living in Bush Creek, Washington Co. Ark. With wife Charity and three teenage grand children William, Mary and Thomas.
