STANDISH -- Vera B. Smith Stevens, 91, died at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010. The family is very appreciative of the excellent care and comfort that she received by the staff. Special thanks to Dr. Hintermeister for his care and communications with the family.

She was a resident at the Newton Center for the past eleven months before going to the hospital on Sept. 4. She was a resident at The Lodges in Springvale for four months before going to the Newton Center. Thanks to these two facilities for the good care that she received.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1919, in Buxton, the daughter of Llewellyn and Florence (Whitney) Smith and was the third of nine children. Her family moved to Standish when she was an infant. Raised and educated in Standish, she was a graduate of Standish High School, class of 1936.

She married Leonard 'Ike' Stevens on Sept. 15, 1937. Vera was predeceased by her husband in 1990, following 52 years of marriage.

Vera lived on the Cape Road and for several years her grandson. Vera lived in Florida for two winters and one summer at her home in the care of her daughter and son-in-law.

Vera's early working years began in the Limerick Woolen Mills. Several years later she worked on the second shift in the Sanford Woolen Mills. For many years she canned many quarts of vegetables and fruits every summer from their garden. She also made pickles, jam and jellies each season and made butter on a weekly basis. She had regular 'butter customers' and saved the money in the 'butter jar' in the cupboard for school lunches, or a new pair of shoes for one of the girls. They raised their own beef, pork, chickens, turkeys, rabbits and they had a milk cow.

She was also a great cook.

Later on she went to work for Plummer's grocery store in Buxton just for the summer and that job lasted for several years. After working at Plummer's, Vera became an independent salesperson for Dutchmaid, a clothing line demonstrated in homes and made in Pennsylvania. She retired in 1985 after winning many awards and trips for outstanding sales in New England. Vera was a very hard worker all of her life and didn't begin to slow down until she had to depend on a wheel chair to get around.

She was predeceased by four brothers, two sisters; and one son-in-law. [Survivors omitted]

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, 1 p.m., at Dows Cemetery in Standish.
