Jacob Hull served in the Civil War joining the Union Army, being sworn in as a private on March 9, 1864 as a member of the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company E. The regiment also was known as the 159th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Later, on Feb. 26, 1865, he mustered out of the 14th Cavalry and transferred to the 47th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company K.

Jacob Hull fied for invalid pension 26 January 1885. The pension card says his widow "Hyle" filed for widow pension in 1887. Jacob suffered from deafness and illness of this right lung and he entered the Camp Reynolds Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA in March 1864. Later that month he deserted and it was thought that he returned to the regiment.

Around Christmas 1864 while in the field near Gordonsville, Virginia, Jacob was hurt in a horse fall which ruptured across his stomach which caused him to have a hemorrhage in his lungs. He also claimed he had suffered head and liver problems by catching colds while standing guard after nightfall, laying in the mud and having his head frozen to the ground and getting wet while swimming rivers. In January 1865 he was sent to Winchester Virginia to Harpers Ferry and them was transferred to Washington, DC in April 1865. He was known to be said the he treated himself by getting medication and means until he spent everything he was worth.

On 26 January 1885 Jacob applied for and was awarded a soldier's pension. [Invalid App #530.923 - Cert #432.757].

In 1890 in South Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, widow Hyley Hull was listed on the 1890 Veteran's Schedule as the widow of Jacob Hull.
