English economist and politician, born at Dunford, Sussex, died at London.
Active as a salesman and manufacturer in London and Manchester, he engaged in politics fighting the protectionist Corn laws. Since 1841 Member of the Commons. In 1860, Cobden's action was decisive for the signing of a commercial treaty between Britain and France.
