Charles was the first child of John Walker Riddle and his second wife, Rachael Harriet Close. He was named after Dr. Charles Meigs, a physician acquaintance of his father. At the time of the 1870 Census (after the divorce of his parents), he was living with his Grandmother Catherine Close in French Creek Twp., Mercer Co., Pa. By 1876, he was living and working on a farm in Utica, Venango Co., Pa. In 1878, Charles married Mary Ann McIntyre, who was born in Oct 1856 in Oh., a daughter of Hugh McIntyre (b. 1825, Ireland) and Mary (b. 1825, Ireland). Charles and Mary had one son and one daughter—John Walker and (Leona) May.
At the time of the 1880 Census, Charles, Mary and son were living with her parents in Liberty Twp., Trumbull Co., Oh., where Charles was a sewing machine agent. They subsequently moved to Youngstown, Oh., where Charles was a policeman for 20 years, and after retiring was a watchman at McKelvey’s store for 9 years.
Mary died of typhoid fever on 19 Aug 1906 in Youngstown. Charles died ten years later at the home of his son and is buried with Mary at Belmont Park Cemetery in Youngstown, Mahoning Co., Oh.
