He was born on March 2, 1930, in Douglas to Fred and Ruth (Shaw) Hageman. He grew up and received his early education in Shawnee. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1948, then attended the University of Wyoming for two years before entering the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.

Following his discharge from service, he met and eventually married Marion Malvin on May 19, 1956, in Douglas. The couple ran a sheep ranch north of Douglas for five years before moving to a ranch near Ft. Laramie where they have resided since.

Mr. Hageman served Wyoming for 24 years in the House of Representatives for Goshen, Platte and Converse counties. He also served for nine years on the Goshen County School Board and was a life member of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. Mr. Hageman was also a member of Farm Bureau, American Legion, Moose, Environmental Institute at the University of Wyoming and Wyoming Woolgrowers Association.

He was a former board member of the University of Wyoming Alumni Association and served on the board of directors for the Western History Center. Mr. Hageman also worked closely with the local conservation districts and Wyoming Weed and Pest. He had served as chairman of the House Education Committee and, at the time of his death, was serving as chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.

Jim and Marion served as foster parents to many children. He was honored as National Parent of the Year in 1996 and the couple were honored as University of Wyoming Family of the Year and as the Wyoming Livestock Roundup Ag Family of the Year in 2002. Mr. Hageman received an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of Wyoming in 2006.

His lifetime passions were ranching, his family, education and the state of Wyoming. Even though he spent his life in public service, his true purpose was on a horse caring for his livestock. His wit and sense of humor were enjoyed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Marion of Ft. Laramie; daughters Julia (Ross) Newman of Torrington, Rachel (Jim) Rubino of Laramie and Harriet (John Sundahl) Hageman of Cheyenne; sons James (Kyra) Hageman of Casper, Hugh (Mary Lee) Hageman of Ft. Laramie, Dewey (Dinelle) Hageman of Jay Em and John Hageman of Las Vegas; brother Fred Hageman of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; sisters Margaret Sedenquist of Pasadena, Calif., Patti Cobb of Walla Walla, Wash., and Kathy Hall of Grand Junction, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Hilda.
