David J. Mezykowski, 64, residing on Varsity Drive, South Bend, passed away on Friday, September 7, 2001, as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident. The only son of Stanley J. and Honoraria (Kochanowski) Mezykowski, he was born in Chicago, IL, on May 24, 1937, and lived in South Bend his entire life. On May 18, 1975, he married the former Peggy Garrod, who survives. Also surviving are two step-sons, Tony (DeeDee) and Dana (Megan); seven grandchildren, Brian (Susan), Brett (Sara), Nichole, Angela, Toni Brook, Brandy (Cap) & Cody; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Janis (Frank) Banicki; and thirteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepdaughter, Linda.
David served with the United States Navy for four years in Norfolk, Virginia, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was a member of the South Bend Fire Department until his retirement after 32 years of service. David was a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed frequent trips to Canada and Alaska. He was also a member of the former Central High School 1955 State Champions swim team.
