He met and married Mary Viola Reid on February 14, 1941. He adopted Mary's young son Richard and then she gave birth to their daughter, Barbara Darlene Haynes in Heppner, Oregon in 1943. Bob served in the Army during World War II, where he received a medical discharge in the later part of 1944. Then they moved to Bellevue, Washington, This marriage ended in divorce, he then married Arlene Beth Meyer on September 1, 1950 in Bellevue. Arlene had two young daughters, Vicki and Christina who Bob helped raised.

Bob loved to work with wood. He was a very accomplished cabinet maker, and very reputable with home remodeling. He operated his own residential contracting business, Haynes Construction Company, until he retired in 1980.

He and his wife Arlene moved to Port Orchard after retirement.

Robert A. Haynes, 67, of Port Orchard died December 21, 1987 in Spring Valley, California, while visiting Arlene's daughter Chris for Christmas.
