Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1963 to 1974), he played at the second base, third base, right field and left field positions with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds. Born Philip Joseph Gagliano, he attended Christian Brothers High School in Memphis. He was a classmate of Tim McCarver, who became his teammate during his years with the Cardinals. Signed by the Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1959, he attended the University of Memphis, prior to making his Major League debut with St. Louis on April 16, 1963. The following year (1964), he experienced a world championship season with the Cardinals and in 1965, he produced a career-high 87 hits in 122 games played. He was a member of the 1967 World Champion Cardinals' team and recorded one at bat during the World Series. In 1968, when the Cardinals won their second consecutive National League Pennant but lost to the Detroit Tigers in the World Series, he saw playing time in three games during the Fall Classic. He experienced his final postseason action with the Cincinnati Reds during the 1973 National League Championship Series. During the course of his career, he established himself as a fine versatile defense player and dependable pinch hitter. In 702 career regular season games, he compiled 336 hits, with a .238 lifetime batting average. His brother Ralph Gagliano, briefly player in the Major Leagues. He suffered a heart attack several years ago and was in declining health, prior to his death.
