Helen was my mother. She had been married three times and had only one child. Helen was friend to many. After retiring she and husband #2 moved to retire in Tucson. For 25 years she volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital as a transporter but sometimes friend of the many outpatients.
Mother was the lady who would volunteer to take you to the doctor or hospital for your appointment. She would sit silently in the hallway waiting for your return and then on to the pharmacy for your medications perhaps followed by a lunch.
Mother's memory declined on a down slope and after witnessing her daily struggles, we returned to Cook County, IL. She missed her mountains and blue skies but mostly missed the many friends who came into her life and then passed away.
Alzheimer's slowly claimed mom's many adult memories, the best and worst of the days of her life and finally her dignity when others had to care for her. Her vocabulary was stolen from her and she could only struggle to say simple sentences.
Mother refused food or drink and only was given medication by IV in the hospital. She left this life on her terms leaving a hole in the hearts of the many who knew her.
Thank you mother for caring for so many.
