Irene Franklin was called to heaven on Sunday, after 88 years of loving service to God, family and friends. She is preceded in death by her son, Dennis and his daughter Tara, and eight of her siblings.

Irene is survived by her husband of 69 years, George Franklin, two children Marsha Corner (John) and David Franklin (Lee), three grandchildren Douglas Franklin (Kim), Chad Corner (Jennifer) and Laura Corner Sinclair (Allen), three great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. Also, she is survived by sister Edith Chepult, two sister-in-laws Mary Evans and Barbara Ellis, and Dennis’ widow Pam.

Irene went through life with a twinkle in her eye, a smile to share and a kind word. She loved children. There are indelible images of Irene as a young, loving mother playing with her three small children on the white sands of Pensacola Beach. Tossing a beach ball for Dennis to catch. Teaching David how to float. Toweling Marsha off after a swim in the Gulf of Mexico. Others show a younger, bashful Irene embraced in George’s arms while standing on the front porch of their first home.

She loved her large Richburg / Thompson family gatherings and took her family to many, many wonderful Sunday dinners at Ma Dee and Pa Jesse’s country home.

She shined in her own kitchen, especially her rich seafood gumbo and chocolate meringue pies. Her favorite movie was the “Sound of Music” and she loved to dance with George to their song, “Star Dust”. Singing was not her forte but she showed little fear when a hymnal was in hand.

Irene dedicated herself to no less than a few decades of traveling to baseball and football games in support of George, Dennis and Douglas, her star athletes. Irene loved to travel and the excitement of what might be next: the blue glaciers in Alaska, the purple mountains of Colorado, the wild dogwoods in the Ozarks, and the many color fields of wildflowers in the Smokies. She sparkled at Buckingham Palace and dined at Leeds Castle with “the man of her dreams”, George. Though she never figured out, to her satisfaction, the mystery of Stonehenge she marveled at what men could accomplish. Irene surprised more than a few when she, Betty Jean Davis, and Scottie Brooks piled in to Myrtle Micari’s Cadillac Fleetwood and the four headed west on an extended cross-country adventure; these ladies had a blast!

She loved to play games for fun, mostly dominoes and cards. She was never a poor loser and could easily laugh at her mistakes and wins. Coffee, pie and lots of fun with family and friends filled her home.

Irene was baptized at Gonzalez Baptist Church on July 5, 1946. She loved life and sought God’s guidance in all her affairs. She always had hope and humility.

Special thanks are extended to the staff at Gulf Coast Health and Rehab for their care. To Irene’s personal sitters, Yurleen Bush and Emma Geron, the family extends heartfelt gratitude for the love and joy they provided Irene on a daily basis.
