ATLANTA: Susan Bowen, 45, tough yet caring at work, home

By DERRICK HENRY

The combination of toughness and compassion served Susan Bowen well in her professional and personal lives.
In 1998, Mrs. Bowen became managing editor of Family Business Review, a scholarly quarterly published through the Cox Family Enterprise Center at Kennesaw State University and circulated internationally.

"The journal is very important to the visibility of the center, and Susan was responsible for developing it into a professionally managed publication," said center director Joseph Astrachan of Marietta.

"Susan was an extremely quick study, very solid. She was absolutely great with the authors, tough and truthful, able to uphold high standards, yet compassionate. She helped people do what they needed to do with a level of caring you don't usually see."

Susan Wynne Bowen, 45, died Wednesday of breast cancer at her Atlanta residence. The body was cremated. The memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Anne's Episcopal Church. H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, is in charge of arrangements.

In 1985, the Savannah native met Charles Bowen on the first day of class at Duke University, where she was earning a master's degree in history. Love blossomed. The couple married in 1988 and settled in Atlanta in 1992.
Mrs. Bowen found work as program director for the Georgia Humanities Council, which provides grants and administrative support to nonprofit groups.

It was a job she loved. But when her son was born in 1994, Mrs. Bowen quit to rear him full-time.
Two years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her coping strategies, even after the cancer went into remission, led her to realize the need for support groups. At St. Anne's, she chaired the wellness committee.

"As a young mother dealing with breast cancer, she understood the importance of the church in helping people with physical and mental health issues as well as issues of faith," said the Rev. Julie Huston of Dunwoody, St. Anne's retired associate pastor. "She brought a lot to that committee and spoke openly of her own experiences."
Mrs. Bowen was a member of the church's parish visitors committee, bringing cheer to parishioners who were shut-ins or chronically ill. As Mrs. Bowen's own illness progressed, the tables turned; it was she who looked forward to visits from members of the committee.
"Susan remained upbeat and bright, never seeming to focus on herself," the Rev. Huston said. "She continued to learn and grow."

Survivors other than her husband include her son, Jack Bowen of Atlanta; and her parents, Ann and Jack Wynne of Savannah.
