Suggested edit: Born into slavery originally by a North Carolina Williams family, then sold to Cherokee Indians in North Carolina and later freed by the Indians. All slaves of the Cherokee were given the last name Freeman when freed, and Williams came from his previous owners names. There have been rumors that he was half Cherokee, but there has been no DNA Evidence, but his African American DNA did carry to some of his Descendants. However there is evidence that his grandson of the same name was registered as Choctaw.
