Jimmie met James Roy Layton from the Cartwright community and they were married June 26, 1943. Roy served in the US Army in Ft. Riley, Kansas and Ft. Knox, Kentucky during World War II. After the war, they returned to the family farm where they raised their daughters, Sue and Wanette. Jimmie was a homemaker and worked alongside her husband on the Layton farm in the Clover Hill community. He preceded her in death, August 16, 1970. Miss Jimmie also was a long time employee of Phillips Grocery Store in Quitman.
In 1974 Jimmie married Will Looney Phillips of Quitman. They were owners of the Colony House Gift Shop in Quitman for several years and were members of the First Baptist Church in Quitman. Mr. Phillips passed away in 2003, still working part time in the oil industry.
Jimmie is survived by two daughters, Wanette Layton of Quitman and Sue Layton Dance and husband Tom of Garland; two grandchildren, Kevin Thomas Dance of Dallas, and Kristie Dance McGinnis and son in law, Jay, of Allen; one great granddaughter, Gretta Kate McGinnis of Allen; siblings, Wanda Garret, brother in law Johnnie of Mineola, and brother in law Billy Paul Hall of Temple. Jimmie was also blessed to love and be loved by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Jimmie was a faithful believer in the Lord Jesus Christ since the age of 9 years old. Her home was always full of family and friends. Being the oldest of several children after her mother died, Jimmie raised and cared for her younger siblings and was always considered “mom” to them. She was the matriarch of the family and her house was where everyone gathered and came home.
She was a wonderful cook, and avid gardener, enjoyed quilting and handwork, and loved to read. Her spirit and countenance showed her love for Christ in everything she did. She was quiet, humble, sweet, and kind. She was enormously gifted in the fruits of the spirit.
Jimmie did not have an easy life but certainly one well lived, well loved, and rich in fulfillment and purpose.
Family and friends will remember her as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and beloved friend. Our precious “Gigi” has left a beautiful legacy for her family who will miss her deeply.
