Gary Browning, age 78, of Mattoon passed away at 10:52 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital.
Funeral services for family and friends will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Brad Brown officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the funeral home.
Gary was born on October 11, 1938 in Franklin County, IL the son of John E. and Wynette (Phillips) Browning. He married Carol Senteney on October 25, 1959.
Survivors include his loving wife, Carol Browning of Mattoon, IL; daughters, Connie (Jim) Thompson of Charleston, IL and Pamela Hortenstine of Sullivan, IL; grandchildren, Britni (Caleb) Hawbaker of Windsor, IL, Heather (Eric) Sanders of Benton, IL and Jacob Hortenstine of Sullivan, IL; brother, Carol G. (Kay) Browning of Sadorus, IL; sister, Idalene Watkins of Arthur, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Linda Frey.
Gary proudly served in the United States Army. He was a lifelong mechanic and retired as Fleet Mechanic for I.C.T.C in 2002. Gary enjoyed restoring Old Ford V8 trucks as a hobby and business. Gary participated in the Newport, Indiana Hill Climb for over 30 years. After retirement, Gary could be found fishing with “Grammy” on Lake Paradise. Gary was a great man of faith and was always willing to help friends or strangers. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
