Charles R. Farrar Passed away on December 18, 2016, at the age of 94.

He was born on February 14th, 1922 to Jesse and Lela Countryman Farrar and lived his early life in North Bush and Newkirks, Town of Caroga.

Later he transferred from Wheelerville School to Johnstown High School for his senior year; which graduated in 1941.

On September 27th 1942 he married his high school sweetheart, Iona L. Duross.

However, one week from marrying his love, he was sitting on a train heading for the US Army’s Boot camp. Charles served four years on bases around the United States, including the honor of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.

After discharge, he and Iona returned to Johnstown to begin married life. Charles and Iona were very active in the former Johnstown Methodist Church.

Charles enjoyed going to his father’s woods, with a horse and sleigh, to chop down the biggest tree for the church Christmas tree and with the help of friends; decorate.

He was also a Sunday school teacher, choir member and all-around good guy. Longtime friendships were made over those years.

Charles retired from the Johnstown N.Y. Dept. of Transportation and continued to be very active through the years.

Through the 70’s, one of his favorite ways to spend time was playing volleyball at The Johnstown YMCA. He enjoyed boating on The Great Sacandaga Lake, Cross Country skiing, The Senior Citizens golf league, The Shirley Luck Senior Club and walking the streets of Johnstown, even well into his 80’s.

He leaves behind his wife of 74 years, Iona, and two daughters; Sue Allen Cichy (Tom) and Shirleen Farrar. Charles has three grandchildren, Julie Garnet, Jacob Cichy (Makiko) and Jessica Zimmerman (Sam), four great-grandsons; Zachary and Keegan Garnet and Kyle and Kolbe Zimmerman and his beloved grand-dogs; Chloe, Frankee, Bailey, Maya, Molly and Boscar.

Interment at Fern Dale Cemetery.
