York, Maine — Ann Ott, 62, died Monday, December 28, 2009, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was the daughter of Cecil and Esther Byrd of Bloomington, Indiana.

Ann served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa. She earned a doctorate degree in rhetoric and linguistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 1987, she published "Losing My Place," a novel set in Indonesia, where she lived as a teenager. Ann was a long-standing communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Charles Ott of York, Maine; her daughter, Esther Ott of Portsmouth; her brother, Tom Byrd; and her sister, Jean Ferguson.

A memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 2, at 1035 Lafayette Road in Portsmouth, Maine. In lieu of flowers, the Ott family suggest memorials be made in Ann's memory to Christ Episcopal Church.
