Freda Holtsclaw Johnson, age 83, of Newland, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 18th, 2016 at the Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born June 8th, 1933 to the late John Wesley and Hettie Tester Holtsclaw.

Along with her parents, Freda is also preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Johnson and her second husband, Boyd Johnson; her son, Jimmy Ray Johnson; brother, John Holtsclaw, Jr and sisters: Hildred Stover, Frances Holtsclaw, Earlene Turbyfill, Willa Mae “Sister” Holtsclaw, Wanda Campbell and Beatrice Thomas.

Freda is survived by her sons: Bobby Johnson and wife, Cindy, of Altamont, Michael Johnson and wife, Barbara, of Elk Park, Joe Johnson and wife, Susie, of Elk Park and Boyd Tink Johnson and wife, Tammy, of Frank; her step-children: Larry Johnson and wife, Sherry, of Newland, Carol Johnson of Newland and Debbie Johnson of Cranberry; sister, Mary Sue Legendre of Zephyrhills, FL and brother, Harold Holtsclaw of Cranberry. In addition, she has 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren to cherish her memory.

A memorial service will be held for the family at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21st at Cranberry Baptist Church. Rev. David Burnop will officiate.

The Johnson family would like to thank the staff at Life Care Center of Banner Elk and Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for their compassion and the quality of care given to Freda during her extended illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge at 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
