Alois Paul Cannie was born in Tourcoing, North Dept., France, a town bordering Roubaix, France and the country of Belgium. He came to this country aboard the ship Saxonia in 1904 at age 16 arriving through the port of Boston, MA. For some reason, the ship's manifest lists his age as 18.

On a 1917 draft registration card, he records his age as 29 and his address as 90 Hadwin St. Central Falls, Rhode Island. Interestingly, he lists himself as married. His occupation is a silk weaver working for Salembrier and Clay Inc. 229 fourth Ave. in that city.

In a 1920 census, Alois Paul Cannie is recorded as living as a boarder at 56 Van Houten St. in Paterson NJ, county of Passaic. In this census, it lists both his parents as being born in Belgium and speaking Flemish and Alois as being born in France and speaking French.

Alois Paul again registered for the draft at age 53 in 1942. He then listed his address as 178 Water Street in Lawrence, MA as a laborer in the Wood Mills. On this 1942 draft registration under the heading "Name and Address of Person Who Will Always Know Your Address", he wrote the name Gladys Daigneault, 202 Water St. Lawrence, MA.

Alois went by his middle name Paul but his step grandchildren lovingly new him as "Pappy".

Paul Cannie as his extended family knew him, had two sisters back in Belgium, a Mrs. Madeleine Tiers and Miss Marie Cannie. He also had a brother, Rene Cannie of Philadelphia, PA. Alois Paul Cannie was Germaine Desmulier's second husband. He died from cancer in the early 1950's in their family home at 70 Hancock St. Lawrence, MA, Tuesday, February 22, 1955. He was cremated and his ashes were sprinkled at Harmony Grove Cemetery, 30 Grove St, Salem MA on what the cemetery calls their sprinkling lot which is used solely for that purpose.

Germaine again remarried years after Paul Cannie's death to her third and final husband Albert Desmulier. They lived in the same home at 70 Hancock St until Albert's death. Some years after his death Germaine moved into one of South Lawrence's elderly housing complexes for many years. Before her death Germaine transferred to a nursing home for a short time before succumbing to the ailments of old age. Germaine survived all her spouses and lived to be 92 years of age.

In the early 2000's the house that Germaine had lived in most of her life at 70 Hancock St Lawrence, MA. was demolished after it was gutted by a fire.
