Barbara Ann (Stone) Tompkins was born February 24, 1933 in Marlow to Albert and Theda Stone. The Stones doted on their only daughter, who grew up sweet with a stubborn streak she never lost. When Barbara first met J.A. "Jay" Tompkins, Jr., on the other end of a lasso, she wasn't sure she was interested. She made up her mind but her parents definitely had other plans, so she eloped with Jay to Sulfur where they were married on April 17, 1949.

They moved to Duncan and started a family and a string of businesses, including a demolition firm that grew to be one of the largest in the Southwest. In 1961 they moved their four young children to Bethany, where their home became a hub of the close-knit community. Barbara's legendary hospitality enriched the lives of literally hundreds of friends, and her sweet spirit provided a place at the table for so many in need of a loving experience of family. She was never less than elegant, but always put others at ease.

Her commitment to family and service flowed from her deep faith, nurtured by constant discipleship and her Christlike commitment to others. She was an active member of the Women's Ministry, and with Jay led the Senior Adult Ministry at Glorieta, NM. Later in life she became a passionate learner and leader in Bible Study Fellowship.

Barbara was full partner and wise counselor to Jay through business success and challenges alike. More often than not, his winning bids were backed up by her careful calculations. Work made travel a fixture of their lives and source of constant exploration for the extended family.Barbara read widely, instilling a love of learning in her children and grandchildren.

Barbara's love and faith were never more present than in times of tragedy. She lost her dear older brother Charles in the Korean War, suffered the untimely death of her father and more recently nursed her younger brother Jack through long illness to hard-fought rest. She likewise poured out her spirit nursing her mother through her final illness, just as she did for Jay's beloved parents, "Skelly" and Eunice Tompkins, and Jay himself as illness dominated but did not define the last several of their 65 years of marriage. She rejoins them all in heaven after a period of peace marked by travel with her family, the joyful weddings of grandchildren and the birth of several great-grandchildren.

Barbara died surrounded by family December 17 after a brief illness. Barbara's spirit lives on in her children and their spouses, Judy and Larry Porter, Lynda and Gary Plemons, Rick and Lisa Tompkins and Lanell and Larry Olson; 10 grandchildren (and 12 great-grandchildren): Jay Porter and David Smith, James "Trae" and Sue Ann Tompkins (Avery and Weston), Janet and Mark Muller (Natalie and Amelie), Julie and Kasey Scott (Juniper), Kyle and Tiana Plemons (Grayson and Reese), Clay and Allison Tompkins (Warren and Austin), Lyndi and Brad Zavy (Porter), Katy and Travis Turney (Lucy and Liza), Kelley and Colby Connel, and Kristen and Tyler Neal. For over 40 years, she has hand-crafted "Mamaw blankets" with a prayer over every cross stitch that are precious keepsakes for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family welcomes donations in lieu of flowers to Crossings Community Clinic and Bible Study Fellowship. Family will be present for visitation Monday, December 19, 5:30-7:30 pm, at Mercer Adams Funeral Home, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany.
