On October 2, 1945, Joy enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.
He began working at North Island, and retired as an aircraft painter in 1999 after thirty-five years of exemplary service. Joy enrolled at San Diego City College while working at North Island. In 1977, he received as Associate's Degree in Business Administration.
He and his wife, Lola, had 6 children. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Antonio Jackson.
He was a man of faith and knew "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."
