Robert Garner

A pediatrician who was born in Knox City, Mo., and whose parents were Kirksville Normal School graduates, died earlier this year, according to Doris Gardner Cundiff of Kirksville.

Robert Carlyle Garner, M.D., 75, died April 19, 2000, in Atlanta, Ga.

He was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Knox City, the son of Charles E. and Marie (Gardner) Garner.

His family lived in LaPlata, Mo., where his father was superintendent of schools, before the family moved to Webster Groves, Mo.

He received his medical degree from Washington University at age 21 and underwent postgraduate training at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital and Fitsimmons Army Hospital. He later served as chief of pediatrics at the Martin Army General Hospital, Ft. Benning, Ga.

In 1958, he moved to Atlanta and was in private practice there until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Stuart Garner; a son, Stuart Carlyle Joseph Garner, M.D.; and daughters, Mary Allen Ewing, Jeanne Garner Greer, and Laura Lee Gentry, and eight grandchildren.

Among those preceding him in death was a sister, Charlette Garner Stout of Webster Groves, Mo.

A memorial services was held May 5 at Christ the King Cathedral in Atlanta.
