Enlisted, 1898, in Troop 2, Squadron A , New York City. Mustered in , July 8, 1898, with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry, Camp Alger, VA. Troop A shipped out for Puerto Rico, aboard the transport Massachusetts, July 28, 1898, from Newport News, VA. Landing ashore, August 6, 1898, at playa, port of Ponce, PR. Troop A was assigned to the Headquarters of General Miles and preformed detached service. Returning to the States, September 10, 1898, aboard the transport Mississippi, docking at Jersey City, NJ. He was discharged from volunteer service, November 28, 1898 and Squadron A in 1899.

Sick in quarters, Ponce, PR, Aug. 29 - Sept. 3, 1898

He served in Squadron A and Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry with his brother Robert Emmet.
