She was born on April 3, 1927, in Comanche to Sylvester and Arbie (Hughes) Hicks. Dorothy was owner of several cafes in Abilene, Texas. She worked as a waitress at Lola's Café and the Deluxe Café in Comanche. She also worked for Girling Home Health. She was a "Precious Mother." Dorothy was the matriarch of our family. She was a great mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed fishing and loved singing gospel songs. Dorothy was very talented in jewelry making.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Arbie (Hughes) Hicks; daughter, Sondra Jean Keys Mitchell; brother, Sherrill Hicks; sister, Helen Summers; granddaughter, Christina Marie Solomon; grandson, Perry Mark Karasek; sister-in-law, Sesselja Hicks; brother-in-law, Gene Summers, and son-in-law Lee Rex McAliley.
