Dogs were used extensively in Vietnam as scouts, trackers, and guards. Each of the services had their own organizational way of doing things; the Army's was to establish separate Infantry Platoons which were assigned to major commands and which provided dog handlers and dogs to lower-echelon units. PFC John W. Burke was assigned to the 38th Infantry Platoon(Scout Dog), a unit of the 25th Infantry Division. According to the 38th IPSD site, both handler and dog were killed in action on 16 Oct 1967. Only three men from the 25th Infantry Division died in Binh Duong Province on 16 Oct 1967: 38th Inf Plt Scout Dog: CPL John W. Burke, was one of them.

He was a dear friend of my father: You are remembered! My father served with you in 'Nam' as I read he calls it. My father never would speak of the war. He passed away a few months ago and now journals that he has thought often of you. He loved you very much! Thank you for being a friend to my father so long ago! I am sorry that you did not make it back not only for your family, but for my father as well! Sharon Sanders Daigle, [email protected].
