Dr. Spalding is professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University. He was born at Fort Leavenworth, KS, and received his bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from Lehigh University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue. He was formerly associated with the U.S. Gypsum Company and had experience as an assistant superintendent of a paper mill. He has done consulting work in several areas of engineering. At Purdue he is active in academic, vocational, and personal counseling of students.

Albert R. Spalding was appointed Head of the Purdue University Department of Freshman Engineering in 1953 and also Chairman of the Faculty Committee on Freshman Engineering. Spalding was a popular professor of mechanical engineering with a strong interest in his students. He served as department head until 1967.
