SONS TO CARRY BODY LATE D. P. BLAKE TO GRAVE
Five sons and son-in-law will act as pallbearers at the obsequies for the late Darius P. Blake, age 83, pioneer attorney and justice of the peace of Portage township, to be held at 2 pm at the late home in Portage township. Rev. Leslie Hawtin, pastor of the United Brethren church at Garyton, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery at Garyton.
Mr. Blake, who had been ill for nearly a year, died early Tuesday morning. A member of a pioneer family of the region, he was born on the land that is now Calvary cemetery in Garyton. His grandfather, Jacob Blake, settled in Porter County 100 years ago this week and donated the land for Blake cemetery in East Gary. Mr. Blake was a son of Perry and Curlena (Cleveland) Blake.
His early educational training was obtained at Valparaiso Male and Female college, now Valparaiso university. For several years he taught school and also operated a drug stone at Otis, LaPorte county. He was united in marriage to Mary Seberger, of Otis, who preceded him in death ten years ago.
Mr. Blake was a member of the Indiana Bar Association and was for years a notary public counselor and judge in the his neighborhood. He was active in civic and philanthropic work all his life. He donated the land for the United Bretheran church of Garyton.
Surviving are five sons, Arthur, Arba, Charles and Lee, of Gary and Otto of Garyton; a daughter Mrs. Effie Scofield of Gary and two brothers, William, of Columbia City, Ind., and Charles of California and three sisters, Mrs. Ina Holcomb, of Newberry, Wash., Mrs. Frank King of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Emma Davis of St. Louis. He also leaves 17 grandchildren and a great grandchild.
