Antonio's parents were Rafael Serra and Maria Fleches from Majorca, Spain. Antonio was born in route to the US in Lima, Peru. His siblings were Theresa, Rafael Jr, Maria, Vito, John and Henry. He worked as a packer in a wholesale candy factory in San Francisco. He married Gladys Fineberg. Together they had three sons, Joseph "J Tony" Serra the attorney, Rudolph "Rudy" Serra the artist and Richard Serra the artist. Gladys committed suicide by walking into the ocean on Valentine's day 1977. Tony died a widow at the age of 68.
