Hans was born Sansvær, Buskerud, Norway. His parents were Ole KNUDSEN and Grethe Kristine GUTTORMSDATTER.

Hans emigrated to Australia in c1899 with his brother Ole [Allan] 1868-1935. They are both buried in the Streaky Bay Cemetery.

His eldest brother Gulick 1851-1916 jumped ship at Wallaroo in 1886 and married Catherine O'CONNELL in 1891 at Kadina. Gulick is buried in the Kadina cemetery.
