Author. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was a pulp novelist, noir fiction writer, and Hollywood screenwriter. Several of his books were turned into movies, the most popular being "Dark Passage" starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. He died in obscurity in his hometown. His best known works include "Down There" (1956) aka "Shoot the Piano Player", "The Blonde on the Street Corner" (1954), "Black Friday" (1954), "The Moon in the Gutter" (1953), "The Burglar" (1953), "Of Tender Sin" (1952), and "Cassidy's Girl" (1951).
