James Humeston came from Clyde, Wayne county, New York, and located on section 19 in 1838. His brother, Artemas Humeston, had been to the township
and located land on the same section in 1834, and afterwards settled upon it.
James Humeston died May 20, 1872, aged seventy-five years, and Artemas died
in 1874. Their farms are among the well-cultivated and highly-improved tracts
which are found in the southwestern part of the township, and their location and
advantages bear testimony to the good taste of the persons who chose them for
their future homes.
