John J. Schumacher is the son of John J. Schumacher Sr., who passed away in 1897. John was survived by seven sisters at the time of his death, as well as one brother. In 1909, John's sister Anna Schumacher, who was just 17 years old, was murdered while bringing flowers to her father's and baby sister's graves inside Holy Sepuchre Cemetery. Anna was found in a makeshift grave in the cemetery section on the east side of Lake Avenue, near the river's drop-off edge.
During the time that Anna was missing, John assisted in searching for his sister when she did not come home that day. For many months, the news of that tragic event made headlines nationally in 1909. To this day, the murderer has not been found.
