1st Marquis of Londonderry. He was the second son of Alexander Stewart, Alderman of Londonderry, and Mary Cowan, daughter of John Cowan, Alderman of Derry. As the second son, he was expected to take over the family linen business in Dublin. Following his brother's death, he looked after the family properties in Londonderry and County Down, Northern Ireland. He had two marriages, five sons and eight daughters. He was a devoted family man, charitable, and generous. He returned rent payments on his land, and offered work to the unemployed. His son, Robert, Viscount Castlereagh, is famous for defeating Napolean and having the vision to restore peace to continental Europe through a balance of power. Henry Kissinger, the American diplomat, wrote his doctoral dissertation on Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, and this was subsequently published as a book. Robert Stewart died at his family home of Mount Stewart, where he built the beautiful Temple of the Winds.
