Thomas was the youngest son of James Francis and Katurah E (Spencer) Drysdale. He grew up in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a director of the Sells-Floto Circus band, and later worked in the Durango, Colorado Smelter where he formed a company band. Then he became a band leader and music teacher in the San Luis Valley, Colorado towns of Alamosa, Del Norte, Monte Vista, and Creede. He also served in the Colorado National Guard during WWI. He first married Effie Warner in Durango and later Oneta Moore Kirkpatrick in Del Norte.

(Thomas and Oneta also had one other daughter: Emma Louise. She was born in Del Norte on 9 Dec 1922, and died on 12 Sep 2018 in Kerrville, Texas. She married "Tex" Fleming and they had three children.)
