United States Ambassador to Sweden. Ira was sent out East by his father for his early and advanced education. He initially attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and later attended and graduated from Yale University with the class of 1895. He worked for awhile for his father who operated and owned a large meat packing company which later merged with Armour & Company. In 1914 he was appointed Minister to Sweden by then President Woodrow Wilson and served as ambassador from August 28, 1914 to April 3,1923. He served at a particularly difficult time serving throughout World War I working behind the scenes to defeat the Germans. He worked closely with King Gustav in establishing a listening post in Sweden, then one of the few neutral states in Europe. Later in life he authored several books including "With the Trade Winds" and "From an American Legation."
