Born on April 30, 1943, in Dixon, Ill., he was the son of the late Fern "Jack" Dempsey and Frances Scholl of Polo, Ill. He was educated in the Polo, Ill., school system and then received a B.S. and Master of Mathematics and a Master of Computer Science from Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, Ill. He taught at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and Washington State University at Pullman. He was a retired associate professor of computer science/information sciences and technology at Penn State Worthington Scranton, where he taught for 34 years.
Rich served the Dunmore community as Cubmaster and committee member of BSA Cub Scout Pack 88, St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church and as a coach for three girls basketball teams in the Dunmore Biddy Basketball League. He also served as Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 12, Myrtle Street United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are two sons, Jack and wife, Christie, of Scranton; and Chad, of West Pittston; seven grandchildren, Joe, Alex, Dominic, Mia, Zoey, Ella, Alexis and Sophia; a brother, Robert and his wife, Marcia, Waterman, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Egli and her husband, Robert, Hendersonville, Tenn.; and Carol Graham and her husband, Don, Treasure Island, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Alex, on May 7.
The funeral will be Friday at 7 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until the time of service.
Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in the Dunmore Cemetery.
