My great-grandmother, Ellen Collins Birmingham, was the daughter of Jno (John) and Margt Halfpenny of Tipperary, Ireland. She was baptized at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Diocese of Cashel and Emly, on March 17, 1832. On 23 April 1849, at age 18, she left her Irish home in Tipperary and traveled from Liverpool, aboard the ship Burlington, arriving in New York on 23 April. There is no evidence that Ellen Collins traveled with any other family member.
Ellen's marriage to Daniel Birmingham on 31 December 1849 was posted in the Baltimore Sun. Their eight children were born in Baltimore (City), Towsontown (Baltimore County), Rocky Ridge (Frederick County), and Cumberland (Allegany County), all in Maryland. One month after her husband Daniel's death in 1872, Ellen gave birth to their eighth child, James Edward Birmingham, in Cumberland. In June of 1880, Ellen Collins Birmingham and her eight children, ages 8 to 29, were living at the family homestead at 24 Orchard Street in Cumberland. Several of her children were employed outside the house at this time. One daughter, Kate (Catherine), was married and she and her spouse, Patrick Scanlon, also lived at the Orchard Street house. Most of Ellen's children would eventually marry but at least one of her children was living with her up until her death in September 1909.
Ellen's second son, my grandfather, Daniel Collins Birmingham, carried her maiden name as his middle name.
The 1900 US Census record shows that Ellen Collins Birmingham was the mother of twelve children. Apparently, four of her children did not survive birth or early childhood. Three of her children who did reach adulthood preceded her in death, daughter Sarah Jane in 1886, her first child and son William in 1905, and daughter Mary Ellen in July of 1909. Ellen Collins Birmingham died on September 6, 1909, at the age of 78. The cause of her death was recorded as "general debility due to old age". The Death Certificate was signed by her son, John. A handwritten note attached to the Death Certificate noted her death came at 11:40 at the Orchard Street residence. It also listed the addresses of her five living children, including my grandfather, Daniel Collins Birmingham, who carries her name. Ellen Collins Birmingham is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Cumberland, plot C-96, Grave 4 along with several of her children and grandchildren.
