Esther Christine Murray, 91, passed away at Roxy Ann Memory Community, Medford, Oregon following a lengthy illness.

Esther was born on July 6, 1923 in McKeesport, PA to John R. and Gertrude C. (Allen) Lofstrom. She was a 1941 graduate of McKeesport High School. After graduation she worked as a secretary at Westinghouse Electric Company. About the same time she met her future husband James at church and they were married September 17, 1943. During her lifetime they pastored several churches in Pennsylvania, New York and Alaska, including Glad Tidings Assembly of God in North Hornell from 1962 thru 1968. Esther also lived in Hornell from 1995 thru 2003.

Mrs. Murray was predeceased by her loving husband the Rev. James E. Murray.

She is survived by three children; James A. Murray and his wife Joy of Grants Pass, OR, Larry W. Murray and his wife Ann of Geneseo, NY and Sharon E. Heide and her husband Cliff of Everett, WA, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Esther loved serving in ministry alongside her husband to church congregations and local communities. She played the piano and organ and led the worship music at several of the churches James pastored. She also led Vacation Bible Schools and youth groups. She had a servant’s heart and loved to care for people.

Upon retirement, Esther and James moved to Alaska to be near their son Jim and family. While in Alaska they would often substitute pastor for churches in the wilderness areas for a month or two at a time. At times this would be in some isolated areas accessible only by plane.
