US Naval Officer and Explorer. Member of the US Exploring Expedition. Born April 1, 1811 to Robert Knox, Sr (also of the USN) and Ann Richardson. Entered the Navy April 1, 1828. Began his service aboard the USS Constitution and later the USS Guerriere. Later promoted to Midshipman in 1837 and participated, as a cartographer under then Lt. Charles Wilkes, on the Georges Shoal survey. He again served with Wilkes as a member of the US Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. He commanded the schooner USS Flying Fish, one of six ships of the US Ex Ex's squadron. He earned promotion to Lieutenant. He later commanded vessels during the Mexican War in the area of Veracruz. He commanded the USS Massachusetts 1849-1852 while surveying the coasts of California and Oregon expanding on earlier work of the US Ex Ex. He retired in 1855 but returned to active duty during the Civil War, along the Gulf of Mexico then retiring as Captain in 1867. Brother to Robert, Jr., Benjamin, Samuel, Elizabeth, and Ann. Never married, he passed away November 21, 1883 in Everett, Mass. His papers are at the Peabody Essex Museum.
