John Robert Maxey, age 72, of Rural Retreat, Va., passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016, at his home. He was born in Smyth Co., Va., on February 8, 1944, the son of the late Homer Maxey and Carrie Pickle Maxey. John was of the Lutheran Faith and had attended the Kimberling Christian Church. He was preceded in death by brothers, Bill Maxey, Richard Maxey, Frank Maxey and a sister, Joann Maxey Wright. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Smithey Maxey; daughters, Carolyn Maxey McVey and husband, Tim, Tammy Maxey Jones and husband, Doug; granddaughter, Lindsey McVey; grandsons, Tanner Paschal and wife, Paula, Trayton McVey; sisters, Ethel Maxey Burkett, Lola Maxey Smith; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at the Lindsey Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Hamman and Vicar Felicia Swartz officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.
