HAMPTON - William Henry Barba Sr., 88, was born February 27, 1928 in Phoebus, Virginia. He passed away December 9, 2016. The eldest of four children born to Nicholas & Floy (Clark) Barba, he was a 1946 graduate of St. Vincent Catholic High School in Newport News.
He served in the Army for two years during the Korean War and retired from C&P and Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. in April 1988 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed wood working for many years and researching genealogy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 51 years Kathleen M. Barba, his son William Henry Barba Jr., his sister, Rosemary Hanson and her husband Storm, and a brother-in-law, Steward Irwin.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Sweeney and husband Glenn; a daughter-in-law, Susan Barba; four grandchildren, David Sweeney and wife, Donna-Jean, Scott Sweeney and wife, Desiree, Laura Sweeney and partner, Stan Hill, and Alicia Barba; eleven great-grandchildren; his brother, Nick Barba and wife, Carol Lee; his sister, Loraine Irwin; his very close friend, Gale Burcher; and a host of family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday, December 13, 2016 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
